Social Welfare Policy

  • The Scheme started on the 01st September 2012.

  • All Tongan citizen by birth who are 70 years old or older, residing in Tonga, and no longer working a paid job are eligible to participate in the Social Welfare Scheme.

  • The social welfare payment is $70 (Age 70-74), $75 (Age 75-79), $80 (Age 80+) per month and payment is conducted on the 8th day of every month at the Fund Office or paid directly into the elderly member's bank account.

  • If an elderly member travels overseas for more than 3 months, his pay shall cease immediately until he returns to Tonga and the carer shall inform the Fund immediately.  When the elderly member returns to Tonga, he shall present his passport to the Fund to continue claiming his pays.

  • If an elderly member passes away, his pay shall cease immediately and the carer shall inform the Fund right away.  The carer shall present the elderly member's death certificate to the Fund for updating of our record.

  • If an elderly member has not claimed his pay from the Fund Office for more than one month, he shall present his passport to the Fund for confirmation before he can claim his pay.

  • The Fund is working together with the Immigration Department of Tonga and the Ministry of Health in confirmation of the travels and death of an elderly member.

  • The Social Welfare Scheme does not offer life insurance cover for its members.
